Seoul's Foreign Ministry has addressed remarks by Japan's Liberal Democratic Party Rep. Yoshitaka Sakurada, who identified the elderly victims of Japanese wartime sex slavery as prostitutes.
Ministry Spokesman Cho June-hyuck said in a regular briefing Thursday that the government feels no need to respond to what he called "ignorant remarks made by an individual lawmaker shameless in the face of history."
Cho said such remarks by Japanese politicians must not continue and stressed that it's important now to swiftly and faithfully implement follow-up measures to last month's bilateral agreement on the sex slavery issue.
When asked about whether it's necessary for the Japanese government to publicly refute such remarks, the spokesman simply said the two governments need to faithfully uphold the spirit and wording of last month's agreement.
Japan's Kyodo news agency earlier said that six-term lawmaker of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party Rep.Sakurada called the sex slavery victims "prostitutes by occupation." He was cited as saying that people were heavily misled by propaganda work handling comfort women as if they were victims.
He made the remark during a meeting with ten other party members.
